Enterprise Workshops in Schools

Employer representatives throughout Gwent came together in October, to facilitate the learning of young people in Chepstow and Caerleon schools.

The Business Ambassadors were from such organisations as Marriott St Pierre, Grolman Limited, Cassidian (an EADS company), Monmouthshire County Council, B & Q, Identity & Passport Office, That Media Group, Wastesavers, Newton Green & Co Accountants, British Telecom, GXS Ltd, Comparison Creator, the Tourist Information Centre (Chepstow) and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Ambassadors were provided with information beforehand, about the current education system along with guidelines for visiting a school or college.  They were also shown how they could use their knowledge of their employment sector and working life in general to help young people find out about careers and the world of work.

Two 'pilot' programmes were run.  The first at Caerleon Comprehensive School with the sixth form (launching the Team Enterprise & Working with Others Key Skills programme for the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification).  This saw Ambassadors in the classroom advising on a variety of everyday business activities as the students set up fund raising enterprises.  The second was a Chepstow Comprehensive with Year 7 for a fun 'introduction to enterprise' day – the 'Burger Bonanza Enterprise Challenge'!

Janet Mier – Education Business Links Co-ordinator – said "Both events were a real success with all those involved having enjoyed the events.  Our sincere thanks go to all attending.  Their contribution will be of great benefit to students whilst providing positive experiences for their own professional development."
